Project|Restoring Respect through Music Education - RRME
In line with the EU’s fundamental pillar of free movement of people’s, this project seeks to exploit the pre-existing frameworks within schools and other educational structures to improve cross-cultural integration among communities. Educators in these structures are often under pressure to prioritise core subjects that do not target the underlying factors that lead to fears, divisions and misunderstandings. This problem has been compounded by the fact that silo learning has been observed in educational environments with educators and schools being disconnected from parents and community support professionals (i.e. youth workers).
RRME aims to close these gaps by adapting the ‘Il Sistema’ music programme to include the underlying values of restorative justice of equality, social inclusion, diversity, power sharing and non-discrimination. The program will produce an innovative training program for educationalists to support them in their efforts to integrate pupils and young people who are at risk of exclusion, with a particular focus on those from migrant and refugee backgrounds. Other target areas aside from the integration of children from migrant and refugee backgrounds is that of disadvantaged pupils and those at risk of leaving school early. In order to ensure the quality and practicality of such a training program it will be built from the ground up in constant consultation with a ‘User Scrutiny Panel’ consisting of teachers and other educational professionals.
Aside from the creation of the program, RRME will also prepare a series of networking and dissemination events in order to establish sustainable links between organisations active in education, training, youth, music, and society at large. This effort to increase communication at local and regional levels will aid in spreading and entrenching the core values of the project still further.
Overall project goals:
- A. Young people of school age;
- B. Adults migrants aged 18-35;
- C. Teachers, professors, tutors, mentors and other educational specialists;
- D. Parents, social workers and other parties who make up a wider community support system;
- Draw on the experience of teachers and educational professionals to create a program to improve the integration of children from migrant backgrounds and children at risk from exclusion from formal and informal forms of education.;
- Produce an online e-course for teachers and educationalists to aid them in integrating pupils and young people through the use of the El Sistema restorative justice social action music programme.
- Create an e-book that encapsulates all the learnings and evidence from the program to be disseminated widely with the aim of informing educational practices internationally.
